Exploring Restorative Justice to Address Sexual & Intimate Partner Violence
Exploring Restorative Justice to Address Sexual & Intimate Partner Violence
April 24, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
webinar
Content:In this webinar, sujathabaliga will explore the possibilities of safe, effective, restorative justicealternatives to systems intervention for intimate partner and sexualviolence. At its best, restorative justice is a community-based approachto accountability, safety, and healing. Rather than a punishment-orientedapproach, restorative justice offers a solutions/healing set of questions inthe wake of crime and harm: “Who was harmed? What are their needs? Whose obligation is it to meet those needs?” The need to movetowards community-based, survivor-oriented solutions is apparent, as manypeople stay in relationships or in contact with those who have harmed them, andfifty percent of domestic violence survivors do not report abuse. Restorativejustice presents a promising approach to addressing domestic violence byoffering principles and practices that centralize survivor-identified needswhile deeply engaging community in creating safety and accountabilitysolutions.
Presenter: sujatha baliga, Director of theRestorative Justice Project, Vice President of Impact Justice, and a JustBeginnings Collaborative Fellow
